Vote Palestine Wills, Darebin for Palestine and other Palestine solidarity organisations are claiming victory this evening as Labor Zionists cancelled their Thanks Bill function to raise funds for the re-election of Peter Khalil, the federal Member for Wills.
“We knew that the Australian Israel lobby and their supporters within the Labor Party were going all out to get Peter Khalil re-elected and we were determined to mobilise Palestine supporters to protest this fundraiser,” said Mai Saif of Vote Palestine Wills. “What we didn’t expect was the sudden cancellation of the event.”
The fundraiser, which was due to take place at 6pm Wednesday 18 December at the Thornbury Theatre, was allegedly cancelled this afternoon “Due to Minister Shorten’s ministerial obligations.” However, Palestine supporters are certain it was due to the massive protests that were planned against the function.
“This is only the beginning of our campaign. Wills is one of the most progressive and multicultural electorates in Australia. The Israel lobby have the money but we have an inclusive anti-apartheid people’s movement behind us, and we intend to mobilise that movement to elect a candidate who will stand for Palestinian human rights in Canberra,” said Ms Saif.
